Wills and Inventories

Thanks to Durham VCH volunteers, hundreds of County Durham wills and probate documents are now searchable online.

Our volunteers also had the distinction of seeing some of their Sunderland research published by the Surtees Society in 2010 (volume 214). Joan Briggs, Rita McGhee, Jennifer Tindall, Ann Tumman and Xenia Webster, under the guidance of John Smith, have transcribed hundreds of Sunderland, Washington, and now Easington and Dalton-le-Dale wills. Their Surtees Society volume is entitled Sunderland Wills and Inventories, 1601-1650.

Full transcripts of the original wills and inventories from the parishes of Washington, Easington and Dalton-le-Dale are downloadable below. For other places in historic Co. Durham (between Tyne and Tees) see the North East Inheritance project website at Durham University and My Family Search which has digital images of wills and probate inventories post-1650.

Wills and Inventories from the parish of Dalton-le-Dale, 1572-1699
Wills and Inventories from the parish of Easington, 1554-1700

A range of sources are also available from My Family Search,  including the parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, as well as some early census data.
